The Importance of Having a Colonoscopy

Let’s face it, no one loves the preparation or the process that comes with a colonoscopy. However, simply put, colonoscopies save lives.
That’s why board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Prem Chattoo, at Hudson River Gastroenterology, considers the colonoscopy an essential tool in identifying potential cancerous polyps before they threaten your health.
What exactly is a colonoscopy?
During a colonoscopy, your provider uses a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera to examine the inside of your colon (the large intestine). It enables us to detect and remove precancerous growths (polyps) before they can develop into a problem.
It’s the gold standard in colon cancer screening — and for good reason.
The life-saving power of early detection
Colon cancer is one of the most common — and most preventable — cancers. The key? Catching it early.
A colonoscopy can detect:
- Polyps (small growths that could become cancerous)
- Early-stage cancers (when treatment is most effective)
- Other gastrointestinal conditions, like inflammatory bowel disease
- Sources of unexplained rectal bleeding
In many cases, we can remove polyps during the procedure, eliminating potential threats immediately. That means a single colonoscopy could prevent you from ever developing colon cancer.
Who should get screened?
Current guidelines recommend that most adults start regular colonoscopy screenings at age 45.
Dr. Chattoo may recommend earlier testing if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or certain risk factors, including:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis)
- Low-fiber, high-fat diet
- Lack of physical activity
- Obesity
- Excess alcohol use
- Smoking
Depending on your results and risk factors, you may only need a colonoscopy once every 10 years.
What’s new?
While it still takes careful prep to ensure your bowels are clear before the test begins, the modern colonoscopy is safer, faster, and more comfortable than it’s ever been:
- Sedation options make the procedure virtually painless
- Advanced imaging technology improves detection accuracy
- Split-dose prep solutions are easier to tolerate
- Faster recovery times
Since you’ll be sedated for the study, we request that you arrange for a ride home from the office. However, most people return to their usual routines the day after their study.
Peace of mind with one test
Many people put off this screening due to fear or embarrassment. However, most of our patients report it was easier than expected.
Think of a colonoscopy as an investment in your future health. It’s a small step that can lead to a longer, healthier life.
